Surgical Correction of Metatarsal Angular Deviation in a Thoroughbred Filly Using Wedge Metatarsal Ostectomy: a case report

Abstract This study describes a corrective procedure for metatarsal angular malformation using wedge ostectomy in 41-day-old Thoroughbred filly. A 41.6 °angular of the metatarsus was corrected with left hindlimb association type II external fixator and methyl methacrylate resin. The animal subjected to surgical under general anesthesia. filly placed dorsal recumbency hind limb free manipulation. bone saw used ostectomy, while bars fixation were drill. Kirschner pin acrylic resin then applied. Radiographic images obtained immediately after surgery confirmed total reduction 32.6 (from 41.6° 9°). With medication Robert Jones bandage, intensive postoperative care instituted ensure that adapted properly linear without overloading pins connection bars. No complications observed. On day surgery, standing walking no signs pain. After 180 days, osseous calcification achieved, implants removed during second surgery. demonstrated adequate locomotion, performed all movements, ran any difficulty paddock. remaining discrete deviations partially hoof trimming.
